Permaculture was developed in the early '70s by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, as a synthesis of cultures and ancestral knowledge of modern science.

It became widespread in Australia as a solution to environmental degradation and loss of unrecoverable natural resources. Since then, several cases of successful projects have Permaculture proven to be a viable solution not only for Australia but also for the whole planet.

The original concept of permanent agriculture expanded and turned into permanent culture, integrating sustainability also in the areas of culture, health, economics, politics, construction and science, building up a true holistic discipline systems organization.

David Holmgren, on "The Basics of Permaculture", stresses that ".. Starting with ethical principles and focused on the critical field of land management and nature, permaculture evolves through progressive implementation of its principles to the integration of all fields necessary for the sustainability of humanity."
